Take the Yawn Out of Your July 4th

Tired of the same old blah fireworks display? Nothing gives your patriotism a boost like a good old-fashioned Booze Cruise. Okay…so this should be a bit classier than your spring break cruises in Cancun, but (potentially) equally as entertaining. This Friday, July 4th watch the dazzling Kemah Boardwalk fireworks out on the water. Star Fleet Entertainment Yachts cruise for 2 hrs, serving you a scrumptious BBQ dinner, with a complimentary beer, wine and champagne service. They also provide a DJ and a dance floor for those of you who receive a few too many “compliments” from the bar.

$69 Adult, $39 Children (ages 3 - 12)
* Plus 18% Service Charge and 8.25% Sales Tax

Leisa's Web

It’s still a mystery to me how anybody larger than a spider could spin a tiny, delicate, lacy web of fun, inside such a small space. Leave it to the nimble fingers of the creative, skilled, (and possibly part arachnid) Leisa McCord.

At age 8, Leisa’s Grandmother taught her to crochet using a wooden hook that she had whittled with her own two hands. Inspired by vintage lace from the 40’s and 50’s, Leisa began thinking outside the box..or inside the hoop..as the case may be. All of her crochet masterpieces are carefully spun inside of sterling silver frames, with white cotton crochet thread. Though crochet seems to be an art of days gone by, Leisa has found a way to modernize the concept while also preserving it’s traditional roots. Plus, they are so unique, they are sure to draw compliments galore!

To see more of these woven wonders, Leisa's pieces can be found on Etsy and locally at Oolala Gift Shop in the Heights. Or just check out the McCord Works Homepage.

Fundraising in Another Dimension

This oldie, but certainly a goodie has been a piece of the Houston fashion puzzle for 25 years. Dimensions, features everything from recent trends, to classic pieces, and looks like the coolest, trendiest, department store your stilettos have ever pranced through. Better yet, they make putting together the perfect ensemble a total no-brainer. Each sales associate is trained to be not only your best friend, but also your own personal stylist.

Be sure to stop by Dimensions between now and August 28th, for their Wrap up and Wipe Out Cancer event. In support of the American Cancer Society’s Victory campaign, Dimensions is donating 100 percent of the sales from their Victory scarf (get it..wrap up..) and beaded bracelets ($15 each). The proceeds for the ACS will provide funding to women in need of mammograms and other medical care. Looking fabulous has never felt so good.

My Favorite Firkin Pub

Close your eyes, and imagine a perfect pub, in a perfect world. It would be clean, cozy, inviting, full of entertainment, and most importantly would serve a full menu of delicious tasty treats into the wee hours of the night. Lucky for us, we need not look any further than Westheimer one block east of Shepherd. The Firkin & Phoenix is not only my own personal happy place, but also beloved by many Houstonians. The same devoted patrons return week, after week, after week. It’s just like Cheers…without Sam Malone.

Their menu includes scrumptious English fare such as shepherd's pie, fish and chips, and bangers and mash. My personal favorite is the Jameson Salmon with a whisky glaze. Order it. You won’t regret it. In the entertainment department they offer weekly live entertainment, pool, trivia, a little Nintendo Wii action, 7 LCD TVs, and a projection screen to fullfill even those with the deepest resevoirs of testosterone. Oh yeah, did I mention that they have 13 beers on tap?

If you want to see what the Houston’s Weekly Chic editors do when they aren’t typing, stop by Thursday nights for karaoke. Mr. Karaoke is the best firkin KJ in town! (Sorry I couldn’t resist)

Something to Write Home About

Planning a special event? Or just need to pick up a fun gift? Now is the perfect time to check out Paper Daisy, the premiere stationary boutique in Cypress. This vibrant, little store is just oozing with personality, and right now they are offering up to 75% off bags, totes, towels, note cards and more.
Don’t let their cutesy image scare you away. They have stationary that runs the gamut from classy, to spicy. While perusing their stock, we may have come across a couple of greeting cards that contained penis jokes. Any adorable neighborhood paper store that enjoys a good penis joke is number one in our book.

Sales Buzzzzz

You will feel like a queen bee flittering around the earthy ambiance of the Abejas Boutique. They have an eclectic collection of pieces from New York to LA, Argentina to Morocco, from vintage to new. You'll find an assortment of whimsical clothing, gifts, jewelry and other accessories. They also carry some glittery children's items.

This week is especially sweeter than honey, because every thing in the store is 40% this Wednesday June 18th - Sunday, June 22nd.

Bee Generous: As of this past May, they are sponsoring a new charity every month. If you shop on a Sunday, and donate $25 to the charity, they will knock 10% off of your purchase. Now that takes the sting out of your credit card bill.

Contain your Enthusiasm

The friendly skies have become rather frigid these days. Every time we turn around we are deprived of another bag of peanuts. Good thing we have the nice people at the Container Store to help us pack the perfect bag.

Both of our Houston Container Stores will be holding Free Perfect Packing Demonstrations Saturdays and Sundays (1pm and 3pm) through July 6th.

Whether or not you pay the extra $25 to check a second bag, is completely up to you.

Houston is #1

I'm always searching for hidden treasure. Unlike those who search for pots of gold or the Holy Grail, my treasure is a bit more humble. It's finding that undiscovered boutique, full of clothes I'm dying to wear. Or when a friend takes you to a hidden, out of the way restaurant that serves the best sushi you've ever tasted. It's finding a local artist that sells paintings precisely to your taste. That's my Houston treasure, and I hope as I find it, I can share it with all of you.

This is a blog I have considered starting for sometime, but a recent article by
Kiplinger Magazine gave me just the kick in the bee-hind that I needed to get started. For those of you that haven't read it, they named Houston the number one city to work, live and play. What caught my eye in the article, was the statistic that 31.3% of Houston's workforce is in a creative field. As Houston isn't typically considered an "artsy" city, I found this to be really freakin' high. So I hope, with the help of this blog, that I can shine some light on all that is unique, fun, fashionable, and culturally stimulating in this award winning city!
