Furry Friday Feature: Blackie

It's Furry Friday once again! A new HWC blog tradition that we hope will help get some of our homeless Houston furry babies placed in homes. Every week we will feature somebody new that would love to be part of your family. This week meet Blackie!
Blackie was left at a house when the owners moved out. The new owner found the former owners, gave him back, then mysteriously Blackie ended up back in the new owners back yard a week later... The new owner took care of him for years until the new owner had to move and could not take him. Blackie thanks Mr. A for taking care of him for so long and will be forever grateful. Blackie now needs a permanent home. Will you be the end to his long journey?

DSW, Dallas Shaw Style...
Happy 20th Anniversary DSW! If I was having a 20th anniversary, I would want Dallas Shaw to sketch some magic all over it too. DSW is smart, that is why they had Dal leave her mark on their limited edition anniversary totes. Too bad every single DSW in Houston is sold out of them. Thank goodness for the interwebs.

Rain, Rain Come to Stay!

After almost a year, I finally had the opportunity to use my däv peacock umbrella this week. I also was spared from having to witness my husband spend hours watering our lawn in his underwear, but that's neither here nor there... If the rain keeps up (pretty pretty please?) I may have to add däv's english quilted black rain boot (pictured above), or perhaps this pair. They have so many fun boots! Check out their site, and tell us which pair you would love to have for jumping in rain puddles!

My Dream Home

As some of you may remember from earlier posts, I am madly deeply in love with magazines (likely due to a mutated gene passed down from my mother). They are truly my weakness.
Being the responsible organizer that I am, I made a pact with myself some time ago that I would have to part with any mags 2 years or older. That's it. So why in the world do I still have an Instyle Home from Fall/Winter of 2007? Molly Sims. I've been in love with her Manhattan apartment from the second I opened that issue, and haven't been able to get it out of my head since. Can you blame me?
What would your dream home look like?

U.S.A.!!!
In the spirit of the Women's World Cup, I thought I'd share this delightfully feminine little foosball table that was featured recently by Elle Decor. The "Ella" by RS Barcelona is the very first ever women's foosball table to hit the market. It's about time the foosball industry leveled the gender playing field. Is it wrong that I want to put this in my office? Who needs a coffee break when you can have a heart racing game of foosball? RS Barcelona, won't you donate one to HWC??:)

White Linen Night it the Heights

The white-hot sultry event of the summer returns August 6, 2011 as Houston Art and Culture presents White Linen Night in the Heights. This neighborhood celebration of art, culture and "citified" Bohemia returns again for its 5th annual installment. The evening promises to be bigger and better than ever as organizers expand the staging areas, featured activities and participants. Over 40,000 Houstonians descended on The Heights last year in their white-linen finest to shop, sip and stroll the neighborhood and celebrate its art community. With crowds expected to be well over 50,000 this year, organizers have focused on expanding the staging areas for the event activities to truly make it a neighborhood-wide celebration.
Visitors to this year's event will once again be treated to a fun atmosphere including local artists, local musicians, and local businesses in The Heights.
Last year's successful White Linen Fashion Show will expand this year to include two staged shows, and local indie favorite Runaway Sun will headline the music line-up this year. Thirsty patrons will delight in the addition of Vinters Own, Houston's Premiere Custom Wine Makers, to host wine tents and serve up their fabulous flavors made locally right in The Heights.
This year, White Linen Night has partnered with The Rose of Houston to help bring a large audience to Breast Cancer causes in the Houston area. There will even be a "Pink Street" full of breast cancer groups with exhibitions and events aimed at breast cancer education.

Airing out the dirty laundry

I'm a little tired of my laundry room looking sooo...well...like a laundry room. Which is why I was pleased as punch to come across this wash room inspiration from Inspiration for Decoration.
Easy peasy changes to chic up your wash room:
1. Paint - Possibly Hawthorne Yellow by Benjamin Moore or Shore from Restoration Hardware
2. Add Art - Framing some photos in a fun frame is a simple way to decorate in a room that is often ignored. Perhaps this photo for a rustic feel, or this one for a more refined space.
3. Replace boring builder light fixtures with a small, fun chandelier. Perhaps this one at High Fashion Home.
4. Window Treatments - doesn't have to be anything fancy shmancy. A simple, tailored valance will instantly soften a cold room.

Sweet Sprouts

How adorable are these? At first they look like precious little succulents, but at second glance you realize that you actually want to shove them in your mouth! The sweet sprout cupcake toppers from Mimi Cafe Union blends two of my favorite current trends: bringing the outdoors in, and of course the cupcake (which, if I have anything to say about it, shall never go out of style).
Order a batch and the owner Sachiko will send you the toppers along with the mini flower pots. All you have to add are the mini chocolate cupcakes. Coolest idea ever.

Furry Friday Adoption: Cindy Brady

It's Furry Friday once again! A new HWC blog tradition that we hope will help get some of our homeless Houston furry babies placed in homes. Every week we will feature somebody new that would love to be part of your family. This week meet Cindy Brady, she is from the SPCA recovery group. She has glaucoma and it was feared early on that she might lose an eye. However, after a couple week on medication, she was suddenly able to see some. Can you imagine her excitement? She is a pretty girl at 4 years old with a history of almost no previous vet care.
From Cindy's foster mom:
She is so full of life and love for life that you just cannot help but feel happy for her. She enjoys being rubbed and hugged a lot and she’s quick to give affection in return :) Her improving vision has not reduced her ability to love people and enjoy her new life. It’s hard to believe that her initial evaluation, after rescue from the puppy mill, indicated her vision was somewhat impaired, because now you’d never know it. Her eyesight has improved so much over such a short time. Clear things, such as windows, sliding glass doors and the water bowl still present a slight challenge for her, but with continued daily improvement, it doesn’t stop her one bit from really loving her life!
The early bird gets the worm. If you see a puppy that would be a good fit for you home, be sure to get your application in asap, as they are on a first come first serve basis.

Fibi & Clo
The magical little style fairies at Fibi & Clo have been spreading their pixie dust all over the blogosphere, and this past week a little bit of sparkly happiness arrived at my door.
So what is Fibi & Clo? As you can tell they make absolutely stunning sandals, perfect for the Houston woman who can wear them almost year round. The company was founded by Texas native (and UT grad) AnaLiza Alba in 2009 as a really cool concept. What if a line of sandals was developed to be sold at trunk shows, like a tupperware party for the stylish woman? Brilliant. So Fibi & Clo was born. The trunk shows are available in Tejas, but they just launched a super user friendly new website, to make them available to anyone around the globe.
So where did the name Fibi & Clo come from? The two kitties that live with her in Manhattan of course. Ahh a gal after my own heart.
How should I wear my new pair? Here are a few ideas, but I'd love to hear yours as well:)

Furry Friday: Adoption of the Week Marlon

Marlon is a sweet puppy who was dumped at a shelter with his brothers and sisters. He has a short haired, black and brindle coat. He is probably one of the sweetest puppies I have ever known. He is doing great with potty training and although he is teething, he has not been destructive. He loves to play with my dog, especially tug of war. He is learning some basic tricks like sit and lay down and is really a smart pup!
He has a big heart and is now ready to go to his forever home! He has all his puppy shots and has been neutered! If you want a sweet, cuddly, pup who will love you as much as you love him, then add Marlon to your family!
The early bird gets the worm. If you see a puppy that would be a good fit for you home, be sure to get your application in asap, as they are on a first come first serve basis.
